The Langafonua Handicrafts Centre is ideally located in the heart of Nuku’alofa on Tongatapu. It stocks the best range of traditional Tongan handicrafts and fine arts, from tapa cloth and pandanus weaving to Tongan jewellery and wood carvings.
Craft work is embedded in Tongan culture. The Centre was set up to preserve these ancient skills and promote Tongan handicrafts both locally and internationally.
Every item is handmade locally, reflecting the proud culture and heritage of the Kingdom of Tonga and supporting the artisans and families who keep these traditions alive.
Langafonua ‘a Fafine Tonga (The National Council of Women of Tonga) was established in 1953 by her Late Majesty Queen Salote Tupou III to empower the women of Tonga.
In 2023, the organisation celebrated its 70th Platinum Jubilee with a special Prayer of Thanksgiving, attended by HRH Princess Salote Pilolevu Tuku’aho and the New Zealand High Commissioner to Tonga.
Over seven decades, Langafonua has supported women through gender awareness, traditional arts and crafts training, income-generating activities, and community development programs.
